SUPER EAGLES STAGE COMEBACK TO BEAT MADAGASCAR 2-1 IN AFCON QUALIFIER

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have begun their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar.

Debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scored for Nigeria, while E. Kari got Madagascar’s only goal.

Madagascar took the lead in the 16th minute when Kari converted a pass from R. Ponti to put his side 1-0 ahead.

Nigeria responded just before half-time, with Ilenikhena finding the net in the first minute of added time to restore parity. Alex Iwobi provided the assist for the equaliser.

The Super Eagles completed the comeback in the 65th minute when Usor scored to give Nigeria a 2-1 lead, with Semi Ajayi setting up the goal.

The victory gives Eric Chelle’s side three points from their opening Group L fixture as they begin their quest for a place at the 2027 AFCON tournament.

The match was also a notable occasion for Ilenikhena and Usor, who made their senior international debuts after receiving their first call-ups for Nigeria’s September fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria will next face Guinea-Bissau on September 29 as the Super Eagles continue their Group L qualifying campaign.
