US RELEASES ADDITIONAL $267M TO SUPPORT EBOLA RESPONSE IN DR CONGO

The United States government has announced an additional $267 million in funding to support efforts to contain the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The US State Department made the announcement on Wednesday, stating that the latest funding would strengthen health and humanitarian efforts aimed at tackling the epidemic.
According to the department, the United States has so far provided $887 million in direct health and humanitarian assistance to address the Ebola outbreak, making Washington the largest aid contributor to the current response.
The funding announcement was made on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The US government also called on other countries with the capacity to contribute more resources to the response, stressing the urgency of the situation.
The additional funding comes after outgoing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed last month for $1.1 billion in additional assistance to help tackle the epidemic.
According to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the outbreak has continued to spread to new areas of the DRC.
Congolese public health authorities said the outbreak has killed more than 3,600 people and infected about 7,500 others since mid-May, making it the country’s worst recorded Ebola epidemic.
