The Zamfara State Police Command has announced the discovery of more than 30 decomposed bodies believed to be those of suspected bandits during ongoing security clearance operations in the state.
The operation, which is aimed at flushing out armed bandits from Bukkuyum Local Government Area, commenced on October 28, 2026, following an attempted attack on Bukkuyum town.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said security operatives, working alongside local civil security groups, had engaged the armed criminals in several confrontations.
According to the statement, security personnel successfully repelled the attempted attack after engaging the assailants in a fierce exchange of gunfire, preventing them from advancing into the town.
The police said the operatives displayed courage and professionalism despite what it described as a significant disparity in firepower between the security forces and the bandits.
Following the confrontation, more than 30 bodies believed to belong to neutralised bandits were reportedly discovered in surrounding farmlands.
The command noted that the discovery suggested the attackers may have suffered significant casualties, adding that the actual number of casualties was yet to be verified.
It also observed that bandits were known to evacuate their casualties from battle locations, making it difficult to establish the exact number of those killed during the encounter.
The police further stated that the successful defence of Bukkuyum prevented the attackers from gaining access to the community, averting potential loss of lives and destruction of property.
Preliminary security assessments, according to the statement, indicated that sustained operational pressure had forced some of the remaining armed bandits to leave the state.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the clearance operations in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to rid the area of criminal elements and ensure the safety of residents.
