Atletico Madrid lifted their third UEFA Europa League title in their history on Wednesday after defeating Olympique Marseille 3-0 in the final of the competition at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon.
Antoine Griezmann scored a brace and Gabi grabbed the third goal to hand Atletico Madrid their second UEFA Europa League title under Diego Simeone.
Marseille created the first chance in the early stages when Dimitri Payet played in Valere Germain in the 11th minute but the striker fired his shot over the bar.
Griezmann made his chance count in the 21st minute when he finished off a pass from Gabi after Andre-Frank Zambo-Aguissa had poorly controlled a pass from Steve Mandanda.
Marseille were dealt a massive blow in the 32nd minute when their playmaker Dmitri Payet was forced off with an injury. The French midfielder was replaced by Maxime Lopez.
At the start of the second half, Atletico Madrid’s stand-in coach, German Burgos pulled off Sime Vrsaljko who was on a yellow for Juanfran.
And five minutes later, Atletico doubled their lead. Griezmann finished off a brilliant pass from Koke to make it 2-0 for the Spanish side.
The goal took the Frenchman’s tally to 29 in 48 games in all competitions this season. He has also provided 15 assists.
With Marseille trailing by two goals, Rudi Garcia replaced Lucas Ocampos in the 55th minute for Clinton Njie and Valere Germain for Konstantinos Mitroglou as he pushed his side for a goal.
But it was Atletico Madrid who made it 3-0 in the 89th minute through Gabi who finished off Koke’s pass.
