WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES CALL FOR EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES IN POLITICS, OTHERS

Women with disabilities in Lagos State has called on the Nigerian Government, its agencies and operators, public and private sectors institution, the media and donors to prioritize the inclusion and participation of women with disabilities in politics and governance to be able to enjoy equal opportunities that will enable them contribute as  equal stakeholders in Nigeria’s development.

The Public Relations Officer of the Network of Women with disability for the state, Kahlil Assumpta, during a press conference said that People Living with Disabilities are always left out of National activities.

While speaking, she mentioned that the objectives of this Network is to promote gender equity and social inclusion as an index of credible elections and popular participation in governance.

Assumpta pointed out that, the public and private sectors should prohibit all forms of workplace discrimination and comply with the provisions of the National Policy on Disability in Nigeria 2017 and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 adding that the sectors should enforce infrastructure modification to ease access to building and movement in and around work places.

The Group also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to include their members as Adhoc Staff and other roles while adding that the people living with disabilities have equal rights as every other Nigerians during elections.

The body however, called on the media to raise awareness on positive disability policies and practices to justify the demands by PWDs especially the women and children and also, create development programs to discourage discrimination.
