Over the weekend, men from the Ogun State Police Command detained 116 alleged members of cults in the state’s Ifo region.

The command’s Anti-Cultism Squad detained the cultists, who are comprised of 46 girls and 70 male members of the Aye Confraternity, at the Galaxy Hotel on Ibogun Road.

They were collected at roughly 01:42.

The police got a security dossier on the local cultists’ activities, including the fact that they would be holding their initiation and anniversary rites, the command claimed in a statement.

The Anti-Cultism Squad was dispatched to the area in response to the report, which resulted in the arrest of the offenders.

Four axes, seven cutlasses, anniversary cards, banners, axes, illegal substances, and cannabis were among the items seized from them.

The statement read: “Today, August 23, at approximately 0105 hours, the Commissioner of Police dispatched the Tactical Unit and men from Ota Area Command to the area based on intelligence gathered on the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Neo Black Movement, also known as the Aye Confraternity, Ifo Forum.

“Surveillance was mounted and over 300 cult members were sighted. These included female invitees gathered for the celebration to mark Aye Day in Ogun State.

“On sighting the team of policemen who had already cordoned off the scene, they fled in different directions and 116 suspects were arrested, including 70 males and 46 females.

“Exhibits recovered from the scene during operation include four axes, representing the symbol of their confraternity, weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, cultist anniversary banner among other recoveries.”

The accused are currently being questioned after being brought to the Eleweran police command headquarters.

Cultists and other criminal elements should avoid the state, said State Police Commissioner Mr. Abiodun Alamutu.

He added that all formations in the state have the duty to comb all dark corners to clear the state of criminals and that the police leadership under him will not accept any criminality in whatsoever guise.
