2024 WAFCON QUALIFIERS: KENYA STUN CAMEROON TO REACH 2ND ROUND
Kenya’s senior women’s national team, the Harambee Starlets, pulled off a stunning victory over the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the 2024 WAFCON qualifiers on Tuesday.
Kenya won 4-3 on penalty shootout to reach the second round after aggregate score ended 1-1.
Cameroon won the first-leg 1-0 at home before Kenya recorded the same scoreline in the second-leg.
With 15 minutes left Cynthia Shilwatso Kenya’s goal to force the game into penalties.
Shilwatso whipped hard a freekick few yards from the area with the ball slipping through the hands of the Cameroonian keeper.
The visitor’s keeper had comfortably gathered the ball but what appeared to be a good catch turned disastrous as the ball slipped through her gloves and agonisingly crossed the line.
Cameroon featured at the 2022 WAFCON but lost 1-0 to Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the quarter-finals.
In another shock result, Tanzania also edged Côte d’Ivoire 4-3 on penalty shootout.
Tanzania cancelled out the 2-0 first-leg deficit to take the game to penalties.
The 2024 WAFCON will be hosted by Morocco, who also staged the 2022 edition.
Banyana Banyana of South Africa are the reigning champions after edging Morocco 2-1 in the final.
