BAYELSA HIGH COURT JUDGE REGAINS FREEDOM 12 DAYS AFTER KIDNAPPING IN YENAGOA

Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, a serving judge of the Bayelsa State High Court, has regained his freedom 12 days after being abducted by masked gunmen in Yenagoa, the state capital.
The judge was kidnapped on the evening of Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Kilimanjaro Eatery, opposite Ekeki Park, shortly after returning from a trip to Warri, Delta State. His release was confirmed on Thursday, though details surrounding the conditions of his freedom remain unclear as of press time.
Neither the Bayelsa State Government nor the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued an official statement following his release.
Prior to his freedom, the NBA Yenagoa Branch revealed that security operatives had been making significant progress in tracking the abductors through digital footprints. However, no ransom demand or direct communication from the kidnappers was ever reported during the period of his captivity.
Justice Omukoro’s abduction occurred in a public space near a police station, where eyewitnesses initially mistook the incident for a routine security operation.
In reaction to the abduction, the NBA declared a statewide court boycott, condemning the act as a direct assault on the judiciary and calling for enhanced protection for judicial officers. The association also pressed security agencies to act swiftly and decisively.
The release of Justice Omukoro has been met with relief across the legal community, although concerns remain over the safety of judicial officials and the increasing threats facing public servants in the country.
