Tragedy struck in Plateau State on Wednesday when gunmen attacked a group of mourners returning from a burial in the Bachit community, ambushing them in neighbouring Rim and amputating the hand of one youth during the violent assault.
It was gathered that the mourners were stranded for hours as the armed assailants, identified by locals as suspected Fulani militia, blocked the road and opened fire. The Liaison Officer to Governor Caleb Mutfwang for Riyom State Constituency, Mr. Timothy Dantong, who was among those trapped at the scene, confirmed the attack in Jos on Thursday.
Dantong recounted the harrowing experience: “We had gone for a burial in Bachit, and while returning, we encountered an ambush in Rim. We were forced to wait for over five hours because the gunmen had taken over the road. Some mourners who attempted to pass through were shot, and one youth had his hand completely amputated.”
He noted that it was only after the arrival of an armoured tank dispatched by security forces that he and other stranded mourners were rescued.
The situation worsened the following day as the gunmen reportedly returned to block the road at Wereng community, attacking villagers, including those on motorcycles.
In a related incident, Dantong confirmed an attack on the residence of a former Minister of Sports, Damishi Sango, in Dakwal village, Riyom Local Government Area. According to him, a female relative was killed and three others injured during the raid. The ex-minister was unharmed, as he was inside the house during the attack.
“I learnt the former minister is safe, but one woman was killed and his security guard is receiving treatment at a hospital in Jos,” Dantong said, decrying what he described as an ongoing siege on local communities.
He urged security agencies to take decisive action against the attackers and restore peace to the region.
Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command for comments proved abortive, as the spokesman, Alabo Alfred, did not respond to calls at the time of filing this report.
