A coordinated crackdown by the Lagos State Police Command on Monday has led to the arrest of an undisclosed number of suspected cultists across several parts of the state, just hours before the annual “7/7 Cultism Day,” notorious for rival clashes and reprisal attacks.
The operation, which is part of a preemptive strike to forestall cult-related violence, was confirmed by multiple police sources on Wednesday. It followed a Sunday statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, warning cult groups against any activities that could disrupt the peace in the state.
According to the police, raids were carried out in cult-prone areas such as Ikorodu, Idimu, Mushin, Bariga, and Iyana Iba. The suspects were reportedly caught while attempting to gather for cult activities linked to the July 7 observance.
“The combined efforts of the officers in various units of the police deployed across the state led to the arrest of some suspected cultists caught planning to celebrate the day,” a police source revealed. “Some weapons and charms were recovered, especially during the operations in Idimu and Iyana Iba.”
Another source said the suspects have been transferred to the command headquarters for further investigation and possible prosecution. “We worked with intelligence from residents. The operation is still ongoing and will not be limited to a single day,” the source added.
SP Hundeyin was unavailable for comments as calls and messages to his phone went unanswered as of the time of filing this report.
However, Hundeyin had earlier confirmed that 52 suspected cultists were apprehended on Sunday during joint raids of known hideouts. He stated that the suspects were in the final stages of preparing for attacks on innocent citizens.
“CP Owohunwa Jimoh held an operational meeting with all Anti-Cultism Squad and Special Tactical Teams commanders on Saturday, charging them to ensure that no cult group is allowed to disturb the peace of the state,” Hundeyin said.
He emphasized that the command remains on high alert and committed to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors across Lagos.
The police urged the public to continue providing credible information to aid in flushing out criminal elements, as part of the broader effort to curb cultism and violent crimes in the state.
