Tragedy struck the Jargaba community in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State late Thursday as armed bandits stormed the area, killing six residents and reportedly kidnapping two others.

The attack occurred at a popular local gathering spot where residents often socialise in the evening. Eyewitnesses said the attackers, numbering in dozens, arrived on motorcycles and opened fire without provocation on six men seated together, killing them on the spot.

The spokesman for the Katsina State Police Command, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation on Friday. He said, “Yes, bandits attacked the community and shot people. Two died on the spot while four others, who were initially injured, were confirmed dead today, bringing the total death toll to six. As for the kidnapping, I cannot confirm it at the moment but will follow up with the DPO.”

Reports from local sources also indicated that two children sustained injuries from stray bullets during the attack. The assailants were said to have encountered no resistance during the assault, raising further concerns about security presence in the area.

Abdulrahman Ahmed, the lawmaker representing the constituency in the Katsina State House of Assembly, confirmed the incident and expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the region.

“The attackers went directly to a local relaxation spot and opened fire, killing six individuals, including an assistant to the commandant of the Community Watch Corps in Bakori,” he stated. “There are also credible reports that two children were killed and two residents abducted from a nearby residence.”

Ahmed extended condolences to the victims’ families, the people of Jargaba, and the entire Bakori council area, while calling on security agencies to urgently intervene.

Bakori LGA has witnessed repeated attacks in recent months. On February 5, 2025, bandits kidnapped retired Brigadier General Maharazu Tsiga, former NYSC Director-General, along with nine others from Tsiga community. They were released after spending nearly two months in captivity.

As banditry, kidnappings, and cattle rustling continue to plague parts of Katsina, residents have renewed calls for a sustained and strategic security response to restore peace in the region.
