Tragedy struck in the Ijegun area of Lagos as a woman lost her life after falling into a 170-foot-deep well at a construction site. Her body was recovered on Thursday, July 10, following a multi-agency operation that lasted several days.
The incident occurred at Abuba Anthony Street, near Obalagbe Bus Stop, close to Fadeko International Hotel. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said it received a distress call at 7:34 p.m. on Monday, June 30, and immediately deployed responders from the Ejigbo Fire Station to the scene.
According to a statement by the agency’s Senior Public Affairs Officer, Maria Fadairo, the woman had fallen into a deep, uncovered well situated in front of a one-storey building still under construction. The structure reportedly includes six two-bedroom flats on a fenced 648-square-metre plot.
Due to the technical complexity of the recovery operation, several emergency and security agencies were involved. These included the Nigerian Police, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), and other responders.

Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, extended condolences to the family of the deceased and praised the coordinated efforts of all responders.
“We express our deepest sympathies to the family and appreciate the collaboration among agencies during this difficult recovery process,” Adeseye said.
She also issued a strong warning on the dangers of unsecured construction sites, stressing that “a 170-foot uncovered well is an extreme hazard and must never be left without proper safety measures.”
The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, has taken over further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
