SPEED DARLINGTON COUNTERSUES NAPTIP, DEMANDS N3BN IN DAMAGES

Controversial rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has filed a countersuit against the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for declaring him wanted over allegations of rape, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking.
In the suit, filed on July 9, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Okoye is demanding ₦3 billion in damages—₦1 billion in general damages and ₦2 billion as punitive compensation. He is also seeking a perpetual injunction to prevent NAPTIP from acting on the “Wanted” notice it issued on June 27.
NAPTIP had declared Okoye wanted after he allegedly ignored its invitation in connection with a video he posted on Instagram, where he claimed to have had sexual relations with a minor at a hotel.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency reportedly referred the case to NAPTIP after the video sparked widespread public outrage.
Before his counter suit, Okoye, in a video, insisted that the agency does not have any right to declare him wanted because he did not commit any crime, adding that their demands are baseless and defamatory.
He maintained that the video was “a prank” and part of music promotion theatrics, not a confession. He stated that the wanted notice “endangered” him, hurt bookings, and damaged his brand.
He said, “Irresponsible talk is not a crime. Where is your evidence? Who is the complainant? You want to use me to chase clout on social media. I am not coming. You people are just reacting to the bunch of people on social media hating on Speed Darlington.”
He further alleged that some women tagging NAPTIP “just hate” him. He said, “They’re mad because I don’t have eyes for women in their late 20s, 30s, 40s… people listen to me and they don’t like it.”
However, when our correspondent contacted NAPTIP’s spokesperson, Vincent Adekoye, he said, “On this, the agency has no comment for now. Maybe by next week, we might study the situation and react. We have no development or response now.”
