On Tuesday, Donald Trump accused former President Barack Obama of “treason” and demanded his prosecution, citing a report that claims officials in the Obama administration manipulated intelligence related to Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.

Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard has submitted criminal referrals to the Justice Department following the release of a report on Friday that accused Obama-era officials of involvement in a “treasonous conspiracy.”

Gabbard alleged that former President Obama and his administration fabricated intelligence about Russian election interference to lay the foundation for what she described as a years-long coup attempt against Donald Trump.

Her claims contradict findings from four separate criminal, counterintelligence, and oversight investigations conducted between 2019 and 2023 — all of which confirmed that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to benefit Trump.

During an Oval Office press event alongside visiting Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, the Republican leader was asked who should be held accountable in light of the recent report.

“Based on what I read  and I read pretty much what you read it would be President Obama.

He started it,” Trump responded, days after facing backlash for sharing an AI-generated video depicting Obama’s arrest.

Trump also pointed to former Vice President Joe Biden, ex-FBI Director James Comey, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and former CIA Director John Brennan as key figures in what he described as a coordinated conspiracy.

However, he labeled Obama as the “leader of the gang,” accusing him outright of “treason.”

Trump has long dismissed the various investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election  and his campaign’s potential ties to it as a “hoax.”

However, a bipartisan report from the Senate Intelligence Committee, led in 2020 by then-acting Chairman Marco Rubio (now serving as Trump’s Secretary of State), concluded that the Trump campaign worked to “maximize the impact” of Democratic documents stolen by Russian military intelligence.

The cyberattack was aimed at boosting Trump’s chances while damaging Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

“Our conclusion,” the report stated, “is that the Russian intelligence services’ attack on the integrity of the 2016 U.S. electoral process — and the involvement and enabling by Trump and his associates — constitutes one of the most serious counterintelligence threats to American national security in the modern era.”
