A South Korean court on Thursday issued a new arrest warrant for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, granting prosecutors the authority to forcibly bring him in for questioning after he repeatedly ignored summonses.

The special counsel investigating Yoon and his wife, former First Lady Kim Keon Hee, confirmed the development in a statement, stating that “an arrest warrant has been issued today for former president Yoon Suk Yeol.”

Yoon sparked a national crisis on December 3 when he attempted to subvert civilian rule by deploying troops to South Korea’s parliament to block lawmakers from voting against his martial law declaration.

He became the first sitting president in South Korean history to be detained after resisting arrest for weeks, allegedly using his security team to shield him from investigators.

Although he was released in March on procedural grounds while his trial for insurrection continued, authorities detained him again in early July over fears he might tamper with evidence.

Prosecutors, who are also probing allegations of election interference, had summoned Yoon for questioning, but his legal team cited health concerns as the reason for his absence.

On Wednesday, prosecutors submitted a renewed request for a detention warrant, which has now been granted.

With the warrant in effect, prosecutors can enter Yoon’s current detention facility and compel him to appear for questioning.

Meanwhile, Yoon and his wife face additional legal challenges in unrelated cases. Authorities are investigating claims that a shaman, Jeon Seong-bae, received a diamond necklace and a luxury handbag from a senior member of the Unification Church and allegedly passed them on to Kim Keon Hee.
