SUSPECTED KIDNAPPER ARRESTED IN NIGER, POLICE FOIL STUDENT’S SELF-KIDNAP PLOT

The Niger State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper in the Barkin-Sale area of Minna and foiled a self-kidnap plot allegedly orchestrated by an 18-year-old student of a college of health in Suleja.
Police spokesperson DSP Wasiu Abiodun, in a statement on Monday, said operatives attached to the Kpakungu Division apprehended 25-year-old Mohammed Rabiu of Lambata, Gurara Local Government Area, on August 2, 2025.
Rabiu was alleged to be part of a gang that invaded Dagwi village via Beji in 2023 and kidnapped a 10-year-old boy. A ransom of N300,000, a carton of energy drinks, packets of cigarettes, foodstuffs, and recharge cards was reportedly collected before the victim’s release.
According to Abiodun, the victim’s father later spotted Rabiu in Barkin-Sale and raised the alarm, leading to his arrest. During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime and named other accomplices, identified as Mahmuda, Aminu, Ibrahim, Yellow, Muazu, and Lago. He also reportedly admitted to killing a farmer in the same area in 2023 and said they usually took victims to Washa Forest via Beji.
In a separate case, police operatives arrested two suspects over alleged conspiracy and self-kidnap. Abiodun said on July 31, 2025, the mother of 18-year-old student Moses Amarks received a call demanding N50 million ransom for his release.
Preliminary investigation led to the arrest of 22-year-old Emmanuel Moses of Gidan-Mangoro, Karshi, Abuja, who was last seen with Amarks. The student was later tracked to Zuba Motor Park, Abuja, in the early hours of August 4 and rescued.
During interrogation, Amarks allegedly confessed to conspiring with Emmanuel to stage his own kidnap in a bid to extort money from his mother. Emmanuel reportedly contacted his brother, Jetro, in Kaduna, who provided accommodation for the duo in Karji Village, Sabon-Tasha, Kaduna State, for six days.
Abiodun said efforts were ongoing to apprehend Jetro, while investigations continue.
