At least five individuals lost their lives, and numerous others sustained injuries in a tragic road incident on Monday near the Ebonyi State University (EBSU) permanent site in Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The collision involved a commercial bus filled with passengers travelling from Benue to Onitsha and a 911 truck carrying bags of sachet water from Enugu to Abakaliki. An eyewitness, Goddy Ogba, reported that the accident was attributed to the brake failure of the truck loaded with water, resulting in the loss of many lives.

He pointed to the police checkpoint and obstruction of the road as contributing factors to the accident and called for the removal of the checkpoint to enhance the safety of road users.

“The crash, which resulted in several fatalities and numerous injuries, has once more underscored the hazards associated with the Ishieke Police checkpoint.

“The officers stationed at the checkpoint obstructed the road during the night, creating unsafe conditions that played a part in this tragic occurrence.

“This unfortunate incident contributes to the increasing tally of accidents reported around the Ishieke area, where similar actions by checkpoint personnel have consistently jeopardized the safety of road users.

“Families are grieving, and survivors are fighting for their lives, all of which could have been prevented with improved traffic management and enforcement protocols,” he stated.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, indicated that only two individuals perished in the accident. He clarified that those injured were transported to a medical facility for treatment.
