The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that six passengers sustained injuries on Tuesday morning after a Kaduna-bound train derailed at KM 49, between Kubwa Station and Asham Station, in the Federal Capital Territory.
The incident, which occurred at about 11:09 a.m., threw passengers into panic as several scrambled out of the affected cabins to safety. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, noting that the train went off the tracks without warning shortly after leaving Abuja.
In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the NSIB said a response team had been deployed to the site to gather evidence, engage stakeholders, and begin an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the derailment.
“Current information available indicates that six persons sustained injuries, and no fatalities were recorded. A go-team has been deployed to the site to gather evidence, engage relevant stakeholders, and commence an investigation,” the statement read.
Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh, also commiserated with the victims, stressing that investigators would ensure the root cause of the accident is uncovered.
“Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation,” he said.
The Bureau assured that updates will be provided as the probe progresses.
