A consortium of civil society organizations has formally appealed to the Federal Government, urging the release of Ramzy Abu Ibrahim, a Palestinian community leader, along with others allegedly detained by Nigerian security forces.

The appeal, dated August 27, 2025, and directed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, called for prudence in Nigeria’s management of matters pertaining to the protracted conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The coalition, operating under the banner of Civic Trenches and co-signed by the United Action for Democracy (UAD), Workers Convergence, Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights, and Yoruba Youth Assembly, indicated that the arrest raises significant concerns regarding due process and the protection of human rights.

The organizations characterized Ibrahim as a proponent for Palestinian issues and contended that his detention could have adverse effects on freedom of expression and association within Nigeria.

They implored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to: Release Abu Ibrahim and others in accordance with the rule of law. Protect the rights of Palestinians residing in Nigeria.

Ensure that Nigeria’s international commitments do not compromise its democratic principles. The coalition further emphasized that Nigeria should persist in upholding values of justice, peace, and human dignity in its foreign policy, including endorsing global peace initiatives in the Middle East.

As of the time of publication, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not provided an official response.
