By Aishat Momoh. O.
President John Dramani Mahama has removed the Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect.
The decision, announced on Monday, September 1, 2025, was made in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, following the submission of a report by a committee constituted under Article 146(6).
The committee was tasked to investigate a petition filed by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori. After considering the petition and available evidence, the committee found that Justice Torkonoo had engaged in stated misbehaviour as defined under Article 146(1) and therefore recommended her removal from office.
In accordance with constitutional provisions, the President acted on the committee’s recommendation, leading to the Chief Justice’s dismissal.
The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications.
