The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended four individuals in connection with armed robbery and membership in a kidnapping syndicate, instilling fear in the community around the Amansea and Awka areas.
During the apprehension, law enforcement also seized two pump-action shotguns and nine live cartridges in Amansea, Awka.
This information was revealed in a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Tuesday.
Ikenga indicated that the police officers from the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, detained the suspects on Monday. He stated that the individuals have confessed to their involvement in the criminal activities, detailing how they collaborated on August 12, 2025, around 7 PM to abduct two victims in Amansea, Awka, and subsequently held them for two days in a remote area at Ugwuoba, Enugu State, demanding ransom for their release.
According to him, their capture was grounded in reliable intelligence regarding a kidnapping incident in which a ransom of N5 million was paid prior to the victims being set free.
The statement included, “Police officers associated with the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu apprehended four male suspects in the early hours of September 1, 2025, and recovered two pump-action shotguns and nine live cartridges in Amansea, Awka. This was predicated on credible intelligence concerning a kidnapping case in which a ransom of N5 million was paid before the victims were liberated. The case was previously transferred to the unit from the B Division Awka on August 14, 2025.
“The detained suspects are: Chigozie Igboekwu, male, aged 31, Odumegwu Chibuike, male, aged 23, Jonah Awudu, male, aged 40, and Okechukwu Nwari, male, aged 33.
“The suspects have voluntarily confessed to the offense and recounted how they conspired among themselves on August 12, 2025, at approximately 7 PM to kidnap two victims in Amansea, Awka, held them for two days in a secluded area at Ugwuoba, Enugu State, and extorted ransom before releasing them. ”
He elaborated that the Commissioner of Police for the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has praised the officers for their persistence and has assured the people of Anambra of the Command’s steadfast dedication to eliminating criminal elements and ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
“The case will be submitted to the Court upon completion of investigations. In the meantime, operations continue to apprehend other members of the gang or syndicate,” he added.
On Thursday, the command reported the capture of a deserting soldier along with four others for suspected involvement in armed robbery and kidnapping.
Ikenga emphasized that the five-member gang is believed to be part of a kidnapping syndicate that has been terrorizing the public within the state.
He further disclosed that the suspects were linked to a report of a victim being abducted on his farmland in Isiagu, Awka, who was later released after a ransom payment was made.
