MANDELA’S GRANDSON TO JOIN PRO-PALESTINIAN FLOTILLA SAILING FROM TUNISIA
Agency Report
Mandla Mandela, grandson of South Africa’s anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, has announced that he will join pro-Palestinian activists seeking to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza aboard an aid flotilla departing from Tunisia.
Speaking at a press briefing in Tunis on Friday, Mandela said his participation was a show of African solidarity with Palestinians.
“As the South African delegation, we chose to join the Global Sumud Flotilla here in Tunisia to say: Africa is part of this struggle. As Africans, we know very well what it means to live under occupation, under oppression,” he said.
The Maghreb Sumud Flotilla is expected to set sail on Sunday, according to organisers, with the aim of joining other Gaza-bound boats that have already departed from Spain and Italy.
The departure, initially planned for last Thursday, was delayed by bad weather, and organisers are yet to confirm the exact time and location of the launch.
About 100 activists are registered to take part in the Tunis-based mission, organisers added.
