Sweden’s newly appointed Health Minister, Elisabet Lann, collapsed on stage during a press conference on Tuesday, marking a dramatic start to the new parliamentary year of 2025–2026.
Lann, a municipal councillor in Gothenburg and member of the Christian Democratic Congress, was only appointed earlier in the day following the sudden resignation of her predecessor, Acko Ankarberg Johansson, on Monday.
The incident occurred while she was standing alongside Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and other senior officials. Witnesses said Lann lost her balance and fell forward, striking her head against the lectern before aides and security personnel rushed to her aid.
Christian Democratic leader Ebba Busch was among those who quickly assisted the minister, who was escorted out of the room to receive attention. She later returned to the hall and downplayed the incident, attributing it to a sudden drop in blood sugar levels.
“This was not exactly a normal Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop,” Lann said after regaining composure. She did not appear to sustain any serious injury, though the press conference was immediately cancelled.
Speaking briefly to reporters afterward, Lann stressed the urgency of addressing challenges in Sweden’s healthcare sector. “Swedish healthcare is of high quality; the main issue is the long waiting times. We must transition to equitable healthcare. It is clear that we must strengthen government control. It is not worthy of a welfare state that so many people are waiting for healthcare,” she stated.
