SPORT: NIGERIA DRAWS WORLD CUP QUALIFIER WITH SOUTH AFRICA
By Aishat Momoh. O.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in their World Cup qualifying clash at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.
The hosts took the lead in the 25th minute when Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong turned the ball into his own net under pressure. Nigeria responded just before halftime, with Calvin Bassey powering home a header to restore parity, though the goal was not without controversy.
In the second half, Nigeria introduced Arokodare and Onyemaechi for added attacking impetus. Arokodare almost made an immediate impact with a solo run that ended in a narrowly missed effort, while Dele-Bashiru’s long-range attempt was blocked by the resilient South African defence.
South Africa, meanwhile, made tactical substitutions, including the introduction of Monyane after Mdunyelma’s injury, while Mbatha and Sebelebele came on to stabilize their midfield.
Nigeria suffered a setback when Wilfred Ndidi was forced off through injury, replaced by Uche, while Chukwueze also featured late in the game. Uche came closest to snatching a late winner, but his low strike drifted wide.
Despite late pressure from both teams, the scoreline remained unchanged, with each side taking home a point.
The result moves Nigeria provisionally into second place in the group, though their defensive lapses remain a concern. The Super Eagles will now be under pressure to secure maximum points in their upcoming fixtures to strengthen their qualification chances.
