A former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has recommenced public activities following a brief medical respite that prompted the postponement of his scheduled appearances over the weekend.

Obi had previously disclosed the medical hiatus in a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, indicating that he fell ill while participating in a tourism event in Enugu on Friday.

Acting on his physician’s counsel, the former governor stated that he had paused all engagements both domestically and internationally for the weekend.

“I am adhering to my doctor’s recommendations and will be taking a brief rest, during which I will not be able to fulfill scheduled commitments,” Obi had remarked.

Upon resuming his activities on Monday, Obi indicated that he began by fulfilling a longstanding pledge to visit a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) owned by a Nigerian entrepreneur he had encountered during his travels. He underscored the importance of SMEs in fostering economic development, noting that MDH employs over 50 young Nigerians both directly and indirectly, and has the potential for further growth with appropriate investment and governmental backing.

Citing international instances such as Bangladesh — where textiles comprise over 70% of national exports, generating over $50 billion annually — Obi lamented the deterioration of Nigeria’s textile industry, which once significantly contributed to the economy. “Our textile sector has unfortunately collapsed and now adds very little to the national economy. This illustrates the considerable untapped potential that exists within our borders,” he stated.

He reiterated his enduring advocacy for Nigeria to shift from a consumption-driven economy to one propelled by local production, particularly through the reinforcement of SMEs.

“Investing in small enterprises is crucial for elevating millions out of poverty and positioning Nigeria as a global player in innovation and trade,” Obi asserted.
