The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has mandated the prompt apprehension of members of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra Brigade (OCHA Brigade) implicated in the shooting incident near Emeka Offor Plaza within the Onitsha Main Market.

The governor instructed that the officers be surrendered to the police for legal action, while assuring that medical assistance for the injured will be comprehensively provided.

This information was conveyed in a statement on Tuesday by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor.

The OCHA Brigade, a task force instituted to enforce environmental and sanitation regulations, has frequently been criticized for alleged harassment, extortion, and the disproportionate application of force.

Tensions heightened on Tuesday when operatives reportedly discharged firearms during enforcement activities, inciting panic in the vibrant commercial center. Witnesses claimed that there were casualties, including a pregnant woman.

In confirmation of the incident, Mefor acknowledged that the government was fully cognizant of the circumstances at Onitsha Main Market.

The statement partially read: “We commend the prompt intervention of the Police, who have restored tranquility and order to the vicinity. An inquiry into the event has been initiated, and the government will ensure that all necessary actions are undertaken to avert similar incidents in the future.

“Regrettably, one of the victims, Miss Chinwe Igwe, was confirmed deceased upon arrival. Her remains have been transferred to the hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation. The other victims are currently undergoing treatment and are showing positive responses.

“Simultaneously, the Governor has instructed that the suspects be detained and handed over to the police for prosecution, ensuring that the medical needs of those who sustained injuries are adequately addressed.

“Additionally, normalcy has been restored in the area by the Police, while patrols and monitoring by law enforcement officials continue to ensure ongoing peace. ”
