Governor Muhammad Bago of Niger has requested the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to evaluate the state’s financial documentation in an effort to promote transparency, rectify inconsistencies, and pinpoint opportunities for enhancement.
Bago communicated this message while inaugurating the 20th Northern Zone Accountants Conference, which took place in Minna.
The conference, entitled “Accountability and National Re-orientation: Unlocking Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Potentials,” convened financial professionals and policymakers to deliberate on methods for national advancement.
Bago indicated that the audit would serve as a benchmark for other states, emphasizing that transparency and fiscal responsibility are vital for effective governance and economic development.
“The subject of this conference is timely and mirrors the contemporary challenges of our nation.
“Accountability, rebuilding trust, nurturing national values, and driving economic progress are essential pursuits that we must diligently undertake,” the governor stated.
He reiterated his administration’s dedication to fortifying institutions of accountability and encouraged attendees to devise practical recommendations that could assist governments at all tiers in establishing resilient frameworks and reinstating public trust.
Previously, the ICAN President, Malam Haruna Yahaya, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration to assess the state’s financial records and guaranteed that ICAN would maintain impartiality during the undertaking.
Moreover, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, remarked that the conference’s theme was in alignment with the national priorities of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, as accountability is the foundation of any flourishing society.
Conveyed by the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Jibrin Baba-Ndace, the minister noted that his ministry was intensifying citizen engagement and broadening governmental initiatives.
The minister emphasized that accountability is a collective national duty and, therefore, everyone must commit to it to unlock Nigeria’s future.
