YABA BUILDING COLLAPSE: LASEMA GUARANTEES PUBLIC SAFETY, ONGOING INVESTIGATION INTO CAUSE CONTINUES

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the security of lives and property in light of the recent building collapse in the state.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, provided this assurance on Monday evening during an interview with journalists at the site of the Ebute Meta building collapse.
Oke-Osanyintolu indicated that investigations had already commenced to ascertain the cause of the incident, encompassing material analysis and other empirical evaluations by pertinent stakeholders.
“We are determined to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies.

“Our primary focus is the safeguarding of lives. That is why we have mobilized all relevant agencies to carry out comprehensive inquiries.
“We urge Lagosians to comply with governmental guidelines, as enforcement alone cannot avert disasters without community engagement,” he remarked.
Regarding the precise number of individuals present in the building, the Permanent Secretary clarified that while figures concerning casualties remain unverified, emergency responders are actively present, working meticulously and diligently.
He underscored their commitment to rescuing all trapped persons and providing necessary medical aid.
“To date, we have successfully rescued six individuals alive, while four individuals were recovered deceased.
“The paramount objective as emergency managers is to ensure tranquility, safety, and an organized response.
“Our heavy-duty equipment is fully deployed, and we are treating this operation with the highest level of seriousness,” he added.
Oke-Osanyintolu further emphasized that the government is resolute in the rigorous enforcement of building codes and regulations.
However, he called upon residents to enhance the government’s efforts by adhering to sanctioned standards and promptly reporting any suspicious or compromised structures.
He stressed that the administration under Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is undertaking every possible measure to protect the lives and property of Lagos residents.
He encouraged the public to remain composed and allow rescue operations to proceed without interruption.
Oke-Osanyintolu concluded by stating that since Friday evening, when the building collapsed, search and rescue operations have been ongoing continuously until the site was cleared.
