The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has disclosed 11 newly verified instances of Lassa fever in its most recent Situation Report covering Week 37 (September 8–14, 2025).

As per the update, the new cases were identified in Ondo, Bauchi, Kogi, and Anambra States, indicating a modest decrease compared to the 13 cases confirmed in the preceding week.

The aggregated totals for 2025 now reflect 895 verified cases and 166 fatalities, representing a case fatality rate (CFR) of 18.5 percent. This figure is elevated compared to the 16.9 percent CFR recorded during the equivalent period in 2024.

To date, 21 states across 106 Local Government Areas (LGAs) have reported at least one confirmed case.

Nonetheless, the majority of infections, approximately 90 percent, have originated from Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi States, highlighting the ongoing burden of the disease within those regions.

The report further emphasized that the most affected demographic remains individuals aged 21–30 years, while no new infections among healthcare workers were noted during the reporting week.

Encouragingly, both suspected and confirmed cases display a declining trend compared to the same period last year.

The NCDC, while reiterating its dedication to addressing the outbreak, urged Nigerians to maintain vigilance and implement preventive measures such as avoiding contact with rodents, ensuring proper food storage, and seeking prompt medical attention when symptoms arise.
