JAMB AUTHORIZES 85 UNDERAGE CANDIDATES FOR EXCEPTIONAL ADMISSION
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has cleared 85 exceptionally brilliant under-16 candidates for possible admission into tertiary institutions for the 2025/2026 academic session.
According to the board, these candidates were assessed under a special “exceptional underage” category and met strict academic and maturity criteria, prompting the approval to proceed in the admission process.
JAMB Registrar Ishaq Oloyede said the exercise is designed to balance academic excellence with cognitive readiness, and to ensure younger candidates admitted are genuinely prepared for higher education. The screening involves written tests, interviews and verification of O-Level results.
The approval of 85 underage candidates comes after a nationwide screening exercise in which thousands applied under the category, but only a small number were recommended for admission following rigorous vetting.
JAMB stressed that institutions must still obtain clearance and ensure the candidates’ welfare and academic support are guaranteed. “This is not just about admitting young talent — it is about ensuring they thrive and are not overwhelmed,” the registrar noted.
Stakeholders in tertiary education have welcomed the development, but also urged caution, emphasising the need for mentorship, peer support and monitoring of younger students in university settings.
