NAFA LAUNCHES SEASON 4 OF NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE – AFRICA’S LARGEST FLAG FOOTBALL GATHERING

The Nigerian American Football Association (NAFA) has officially announced the commencement of Season 4 of the Nigerian Secondary School Flag Football League (NSSFFL), reaffirming the competition’s position as Africa’s largest flag football gathering and a leading grassroots sports development platform in Nigeria.
The announcement was made by NAFA’s Secretary-General during a press conference held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Haven Tower, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, attended by representatives of the Nigerian School Sports Federation (NSSF), partners, coaches, gamesmasters, and members of the media.
Now in its fourth season, the NSSFFL continues to promote the values of The HUDDLE Way Health, Unity, Diversity, Development, Livelihood, and Entertainment while transforming sports participation among Nigerian youths.
From its modest beginnings in 2022 with about 900 student-athletes across male and female divisions, the league has recorded exponential growth, now engaging over 6,000 participants nationwide. Season 4 is projected to feature over 3,000 student-athletes from 11 active states, each fielding at least ten teams.
“This trajectory of growth from hundreds to thousands validates our approach and underlines the urgency of creating pathways, sustaining infrastructure, and deepening access across more states and communities,” the Secretary-General stated.
A major highlight of this year’s season is the introduction of a developmental pipeline for student-athletes through the upcoming Nigeria Collegiate Flag Football League (NCFFL), in partnership with the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA). The initiative will enable graduating secondary school players to continue their athletic journey at tertiary institutions across the country.
The league’s grassroots efforts have already yielded impressive results, with several former participants progressing to represent Nigeria at the inaugural IFAF Africa Flag Football Championship, where both the men’s and women’s national teams won gold medals.
NAFA also reaffirmed its partnership with the Nigerian School Sports Federation, acknowledging its crucial role in ensuring structured participation and policy alignment. The association further expressed appreciation to its partners and sponsors, including Browns Nigeria (in partnership with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns), Unique Open University, Allez Charis Gas Limited, Zibwe, Stretford Hill Limited, and the Gridiron Gems Initiative — which focuses on female participation, coaching mentorship, and leadership training.
According to NAFA, these collaborations are driving not only the sustainability of the league but also gender equity and youth empowerment through sports.
“As we prepare to kick off Season 4, we remain deeply committed to creating access, exposure, and mentorship opportunities for young Nigerians — ensuring that every child who picks up a flag has a pathway to grow in education, sport, leadership, or community life,” the association emphasized.
NAFA further urged the media to continue amplifying the league’s story, adding that a special knowledge session would be held to equip journalists with insights and data on the fast-growing sport.
Concluding the address, the Secretary-General described the NSSFFL as more than just a competition but a movement uniting thousands of young athletes, schools, and communities across Nigeria and solidifying the country’s place as a leader in flag football development in Africa.
“From Lagos to Kaduna, Port Harcourt to Abuja, the NSSFFL has become a rallying point for dreams, discipline, and discovery,” he said. “As we embark on Season 4, we do so with renewed purpose to teach, empower, inspire, and expand the boundaries of what’s possible for flag football on African soil.”
