The Eko University of Medicine and Health Sciences (EUMHS), Ijanikin, Lagos State, has inducted its first set of 20 medical doctors into the Nigerian health profession.

The induction ceremony, which held at the university’s auditorium, marked a major milestone in the institution’s history as it formally produced its pioneer group of medical graduates.

The Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Prof. Fatima Kyari, administered the oath of service to the new doctors, urging them to uphold the ethics of the medical profession and serve humanity with compassion.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Gbolahan Awosanya, described the event as “the realisation of a vision and fulfilment of a dream.” He congratulated the inductees for their hard work and perseverance throughout their training, noting that they were now ambassadors of the university and the medical profession.

“This is a significant day for our university and for Nigeria. These young doctors are the products of years of dedication and training. I urge them to practise with integrity, empathy, and excellence,” he said.

Also speaking, a former Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. John Obafunwa, charged the new doctors to remain committed to their calling and to avoid professional misconduct. He cautioned them against participating in industrial actions that could endanger the lives of patients, reminding them that “every patient could be someone’s loved one.”

The founder and proprietor of the university, Chief Hammed Ibrahim, called on well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to support medical education in the country by establishing more institutions dedicated to training healthcare professionals. He said such investments would help reduce the shortage of medical personnel across the nation.

One of the inductees, Dr. Adejumoke Adenuga, who emerged as the best graduating doctor, expressed appreciation to the university for its guidance and commitment to excellence, pledging to serve humanity faithfully.

With Nigeria facing a persistent shortage of medical practitioners, the induction of new doctors from Eko University of Medicine and Health Sciences is seen as a welcome contribution to the nation’s healthcare system.
