A new report by Cambridge University Press and Assessment has urged the Nigerian government and education stakeholders to prioritise the empowerment of teachers as the key to achieving lasting educational reform.

The report, titled “Humans at the Heart of Education,” emphasised that meaningful change in the education sector depends on placing teachers at the centre of policy decisions, investments, and professional development initiatives.

According to the report, rather than replacing teachers with technology or sidelining them in the reform process, governments should support and strengthen their capacities through continuous training, access to resources, and recognition of their professional status.

It highlighted that teachers play a crucial role in improving learning outcomes and should be treated as essential partners in educational development. Empowerment, the report noted, also entails giving teachers autonomy, respect, and a voice in shaping education policies that affect their work.

The publication identified several areas for urgent action, including improved professional development, policy reform to enhance teachers’ career progression, and adequate resource allocation to enable effective teaching. It further called for stronger efforts to address teacher shortages, particularly in rural and disadvantaged communities.

Nigeria’s education sector faces persistent challenges such as inadequate teacher training, poor infrastructure, and regional disparities in access to quality education. The report warned that without motivated and well-supported teachers, investments in school infrastructure or curriculum reform would yield limited results.

It urged the federal and state governments to adopt a holistic, teacher-centred approach to education reform and include teachers in decision-making processes.

The report also encouraged ministries of education, teachers’ unions, and civil society organisations to collaborate in designing policies that value teachers as the backbone of the learning process.

Cambridge University Press and Assessment stressed that effective teacher empowerment could transform Nigeria’s education system and ensure sustainable improvement in learning outcomes nationwide.
