MBAH HAILS MTN FOUNDATION’S SUPPORT FOR EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has commended the MTN Foundation for its continued support of educational development in the state and across Nigeria.
Speaking at the 2025 MTN Scholarship Award and Alumni Induction Ceremony held at The Dome Event Centre in Enugu, Mbah described the foundation’s interventions in education as a vital contribution to human capital development and national progress.
Represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Ugwu, the governor praised the MTN Foundation for empowering young Nigerians through its annual scholarship scheme, which also supports visually impaired students.
Mbah expressed delight that Enugu hosted this year’s edition of the programme, which celebrates outstanding students in science, technology and related disciplines. He said the foundation’s investment in education aligns with his administration’s vision of transforming the sector through innovation and digital learning.
According to him, the Enugu State Government has introduced the Education Transformation Plan (EETP) aimed at shifting from rote learning to experiential and technology-driven education. He added that the ongoing construction of Smart Green Schools across the state is part of efforts to modernise learning and promote creativity among students.
The governor also called on MTN Foundation to expand its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives to other critical areas that affect citizens’ welfare, stressing that his government is open to more partnerships with the private sector.
“We share the same philosophy with the MTN Foundation in viewing education as a catalyst for development. The state government welcomes collaboration with the foundation to deliver more impactful projects,” he said.
In her remarks, the General Manager of MTN Foundation, Calima Inino, described the event as a celebration of excellence and resilience. She disclosed that since its inception, the foundation has awarded nearly 15,000 scholarships to over 5,000 Nigerian students across tertiary institutions.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, commended MTN Foundation for building and equipping a modern science laboratory at Union Boys Secondary School, Awkunanaw, noting that the facility has improved students’ learning outcomes.
One of the beneficiaries, Akas Favour Ngozi, a student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, thanked the foundation for supporting students’ dreams and giving them opportunities to succeed.
The ceremony attracted government officials, education stakeholders, parents, and members of the MTN Scholarship Alumni Network, all of whom applauded the foundation’s sustained investment in education and youth development.
Established in 2004, the MTN Foundation is the corporate social responsibility arm of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc. The foundation has implemented several projects under its National Priority and Youth Development portfolios, focusing on education, health, and community empowerment.
In Enugu, the foundation has also renovated and equipped science laboratories at Union Secondary School, Awkunanaw, installing solar-powered solutions and modern facilities for physics, chemistry, biology, and agricultural science.
Governor Mbah’s commendation underscores the growing importance of public-private partnerships in addressing gaps in education, promoting innovation, and empowering young Nigerians to contribute to national development.
