TROOPS BOOST HARVEST-SEASON SECURITY, ARREST TWO HERDERS FOR CROP DESTRUCTION IN MAKURDI

HOTJIST NEWS
In a continued effort to safeguard farmers and strengthen food security during the peak harvest period, troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) have arrested two herders for allegedly trespassing and destroying crops on a community farmland in Makurdi, Benue State.
The arrest was made on 20 November 2025, after OPWS personnel deployed at Zongo Akiki intercepted the suspects during a routine farm protection patrol. The herders were reportedly caught after leading their cattle into cultivated farmlands, causing significant crop damage. The prompt intervention of the troops prevented further losses and a potential clash between the herders and local farmers. The suspects are currently in custody for investigation and possible prosecution.
The Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, applauded the troops for their professionalism and urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands when disputes arise. He stressed that acts of violence or reprisal only escalate tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence.
Major General Gara also cautioned herders against unlawful conduct that threatens security and harmony, while reaffirming OPWS’s commitment to protecting farmlands and ensuring a safe environment for lawful economic activities.
