A teenager identified simply as DMX has reportedly died after being shot by a police officer in the Alakia area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, followed an altercation between the officer and the victim. According to a source familiar with the matter, the dispute escalated, prompting the officer to shoot the teenager in the leg.
The victim was rushed to the hospital by his friends but reportedly died from excessive blood loss.
“DMX had an issue with a police officer. The altercation escalated, and the officer shot him in the leg. His friends rushed him to the hospital, but he had already lost a lot of blood,” the source said.
Public outrage was sparked after an X user, @Sturbyrich65562, raised alarm online, claiming the teenager did not engage in any physical confrontation with the officer.
“Naija police killed one of my area gees… he did not fight the policeman,” the post read, alleging that the officer acted out of aggression.
Anti-cultism advocacy platform Naija Confra corroborated claims of delayed medical intervention, stating that despite payment for blood transfusion, hospital delays may have contributed to the teenager’s death.
The group also alleged that the deceased’s father is a senior police officer.
Efforts to reach the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Oyefeso, were unsuccessful as calls and messages to his mobile phone went unanswered.
The incident adds to mounting concerns over the use of excessive force by security personnel. In August, a motorcycle rider identified as Muazu was shot dead by a police officer in the Onosa community, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
Investigation into the latest incident had yet to be officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
