Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has urged residents of the state to celebrate the Christmas season responsibly, calling for moderation, discipline and optimism amid the social and economic pressures associated with the festive period.

In his Christmas Day message to Abians on Thursday, titled “The Light of Christmas,” the governor advised citizens to be mindful of their conduct and personal choices during the celebrations.

Otti cautioned against excessive consumption of alcohol, reckless behaviour, speeding and aggression, stressing that all activities during the season should be guided by wisdom, restraint and self-discipline.

“We are especially encouraged to be conscious of our choices this season; our appetites and general scheme of activities should be measured,” he said, adding that the festive period should be enjoyed with the awareness that there would be many more seasons ahead.

Addressing residents who may have faced unmet expectations or hardships in the outgoing year, the governor urged them not to succumb to despair, noting that hope remains alive as long as there is life.

According to him, the new year presents another opportunity to learn from past challenges and strive for better outcomes, encouraging Abians to remain optimistic and draw strength from time spent with loved ones.

Otti acknowledged the extensive social and economic demands associated with the Christmas season, assuring residents that his administration had taken steps to ease movement and improve access across the state.

He said investments in road infrastructure had improved intra- and inter-community travel in most parts of Abia, while modest progress had also been recorded in electricity and water supply, telecommunications, internet services and access to basic amenities.

The governor further disclosed that security arrangements had been strengthened to safeguard lives and property across the state, assuring residents and visitors that Abia remains one of the safest places to live and travel within.

While recognising the economic hardship confronting many households, Otti said his administration had put in place family support packages to assist the most vulnerable, within the limits of available resources.

He also appealed to individuals, families, groups and organisations to extend kindness to the less privileged during the festive period, stressing the importance of sharing and compassion.

“This Christmas, let us bear the light of Christ’s love wherever we go, encouraging one another with our words, gifts and presence,” the governor said, urging special care for the sick, the vulnerable and those unable to cater for themselves.

He described the festive season as a time to demonstrate collective responsibility and reaffirm commitment to caring for one another, in the true spirit of Christmas.
