The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed a replacement referee for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match between Nigeria and Algeria.

Senegalese official Issa Sy will now take charge of the highly-anticipated game.

Omar Artan was initially picked for the match, but CAF reversed the decision over refereeing controversies at the tournament.

Sy previously served as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the AFCON group-stage match between Morocco and Tanzania.

His appointment is viewed as a strategic measure to manage potential tensions ahead of the pivotal quarter-final clash, with both Nigeria and Algeria vying for a place in the semi-finals.

Nigeria booked their quarter-final spot with a commanding 4-0 victory over Mozambique, while Algeria narrowly defeated DR Congo 1-0 after extra time.
