Lagos State Government Arrests BRT Driver Over Pedestrian Death at Ikeja Airport Junction

The Lagos State Government has apprehended a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver in connection with the death of a pedestrian, Elizabeth Fresh, who was struck by a high-capacity bus at Airport Junction, Ikeja.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) confirmed that the fatal accident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, involving a bus operated by the Red and White Bus Company under LAMATA’s regulation.

According to a statement signed by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the driver initially fled the scene but was later tracked down and handed over to the police.

“Eyewitnesses confirmed that Miss Fresh was hit by a high-capacity bus, which has been identified as part of the Red and White Bus fleet,” the statement said. LAMATA also reached out to the victim’s family to offer condolences.

The family reportedly demanded that the driver be arrested and prosecuted. In response, LAMATA worked closely with the bus operator to ensure the driver’s identification, apprehension, and handover to law enforcement.

Following official directives, the driver was presented by the bus company on Monday and formally handed over to the police at the Domestic Wing Police Station, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in the presence of company management.

Describing the incident as a tragic loss, LAMATA reiterated its commitment to safety and accountability across all regulated transport services.

“As a responsible agency of the Lagos State Government, LAMATA is deeply saddened by the loss of any life and remains dedicated to maintaining safety and accountability across all regulated transport services,” the agency said.

The authority also urged pedestrians to use designated footbridges when crossing BRT corridors, warning that failure to do so continues to put lives at risk. LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to working with transport operators, security agencies, and the public to prevent similar accidents and enhance commuter safety across Lagos.
