APAPA DIESEL SPILL: TANKER DRIVER TO BE PUNISHED — LASTMA

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has confirmed that the driver of a diesel tanker that overturned on the Apapa Bridge, inward Mile 2, will face sanctions following investigations into the incident.
The tanker, laden with diesel, overturned on Monday, spilling fuel across the roadway and causing traffic congestion along the busy corridor. Videos circulating on social media showed residents collecting diesel from the tanker despite the obvious risk of fire or explosion.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Bakare-Oki said the Nigeria Police Force is leading the investigation and assured that the driver would not escape accountability.
“It is the responsibility of the Nigerian police to investigate all accidents. I am very sure the investigations are ongoing now. I cannot preempt the decision of the investigation, but I can assure you the driver will not go unpunished,” he stated.
Bakare-Oki added that emergency agencies responded quickly to minimize further danger once the tanker was removed from the bridge.
“Immediately the tanker was removed, the whole area was cleared. The Lagos State Fire Service spent extra hours ensuring all the spilled fuel was removed to prevent a fire incident,” he said.
When asked about the cause of the crash, Bakare-Oki noted that LASTMA would await the outcome of the police investigation and had no preliminary findings.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service attributed the accident to brake failure. In a statement on Monday, the agency’s Comptroller-General, Margaret Adeseye, said the tanker lost control before skidding off the bridge.
She commended the rapid response of emergency services, which prevented what could have been a major disaster on the heavily trafficked Apapa route, a key access road to Nigeria’s busiest seaport.
