The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, has arrested no fewer than 112 suspected vandals of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure across the territory in 2025.

The FCT Commandant of the corps, Olusola Odumosu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to Odumosu, the arrests were made at different times throughout the year, with September recording the highest number of suspects at 58. He said nine suspects were arrested in January, three in February, two in March, and one in April.

“In May, four persons were arrested in connection with the theft of armoured cables and telecommunication mast accessories. Four suspects were arrested in June, while six were apprehended in July. In August, 27 suspects were arrested. September recorded the highest number with 58 arrests,” he said.

He added that there were no arrests in October, while two suspects were apprehended in November. In December, suspects linked to the vandalism of 10 recovered crash barriers were still at large.

The commandant explained that the suspects were arrested for offences including vandalism and theft of telecommunication and fibre optic cables, dismantling of streetlights, destruction of billboards, and theft of road crash barriers.

Odumosu disclosed that 15 cases were currently in court, four were under investigation, while convictions had been secured in five cases. He noted that some of the most affected locations included network providers’ facilities, billboards, streetlights around the National Hospital, crash barriers, and other public infrastructure within the FCT metropolis.

Expressing concern over the rising spate of vandalism, Odumosu said the Federal Government had invested heavily in infrastructural development across the territory. He assured residents that the corps remained committed to protecting public assets and flushing out vandals.

The NSCDC commandant urged residents to support security agencies by providing credible intelligence, stressing that security was a collective responsibility.

“Security is a joint effort, and until Nigerians understand this, we will not achieve the level of safety required to protect our country,” he said, warning individuals planning criminal activities in 2026 to desist or face the full weight of the law.
