The Lagos State Government has announced that rehabilitation works on a 20-kilometre stretch of the Lekki–Epe Expressway will commence on Sunday and last for approximately 64 days, with traffic management to be implemented in phases across major intersections along the corridor.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Tuesday during an inspection tour of the expressway. He said traffic control during the rehabilitation would focus on specific intersections rather than a total shutdown of the road.

According to him, the first phase of the project, tagged Intersection One, will cover the stretch from Chevron to Igbo-Efon, with work carried out on the Lagos-bound carriageway using a structured eight-intersection phased approach.

“To facilitate construction while maintaining vehicular movement, the Lagos-bound carriageway will be closed in segments,” Osiyemi said.

He explained that traffic would be diverted to the Epe-bound carriageway through a dynamic lane-sharing system, especially during the morning peak period between 4:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Two lanes will be available for Lagos-bound traffic, while one lane will serve vehicles heading towards Epe.

Osiyemi added that road shoulders on the Epe-bound side were being graded to provide additional space for traffic diversion.

The commissioner advised motorists to explore alternative routes to reduce congestion during the rehabilitation period. These include connecting the Coastal Road from Ogombo via Abraham Adesanya, as well as another route linking the Coastal Road from Eleganza through Orchid, Lafiaji and Naale Street.

He assured road users that adequate traffic management personnel, directional signage, proper illumination and safety measures would be deployed throughout the project to minimise inconvenience.

Osiyemi also said the state government was engaging stakeholders, including the Lekki-Epe Residents Association, to raise public awareness ahead of the commencement of the works.

In a separate post on X, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, confirmed that relevant officials had carried out a joint inspection of the corridor in preparation for the project.

“Ahead of the scheduled rehabilitation of the Lekki–Epe Expressway, the Commissioner for Transportation, the Special Adviser on Infrastructure, and I, alongside our teams, conducted a joint inspection tour of the corridor in preparation for works commencing on Sunday,” Giwa said.

He noted that the project would involve phased execution across key intersections, clear traffic diversions, counterflow arrangements during peak hours, and both day and night work schedules.

The Lagos State Government appealed to residents and commuters along the Lekki–Epe axis for patience and cooperation, describing the rehabilitation as a critical intervention aimed at improving road safety and ensuring long-term durability of the expressway.
