The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, who died on January 15, describing him as a fearless advocate of religious tolerance and interfaith harmony.

In a statement posted on its verified X handle on Tuesday, the U.S. Mission said the late cleric had a long history of outreach across religious communities in Nigeria and would be remembered for his courage and humanity.

“Mission Nigeria offers condolences to the loved ones of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi following his passing on January 15. Imam Abdullahi was a fearless advocate for religious tolerance and had a long history of outreach across religious communities,” the post read.

The mission noted that Abdullahi’s commitment to peaceful coexistence would continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike. It recalled that the U.S. Department of State formally recognised the cleric with the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award for his courageous actions in June 2018, when he saved the lives of hundreds of Christians during violent attacks in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State.

“His humanity positively manifested interfaith coexistence and harmony, and we know his legacy of peace and acceptance will live on and continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike,” the statement added.

Imam Abdullahi, who reportedly died after a brief illness, gained international recognition for sheltering and saving nearly 300 Christians during the 2018 attacks in his Barkin Ladi community.

His death has drawn tributes from prominent national figures. President Bola Tinubu, in a condolence message shared on X, described the late cleric as “an extraordinary religious leader whose life was a powerful testament to faith, courage and the sanctity of human life.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi also paid tribute, describing Imam Abdullahi as a “true hero of humanity” whose selfless actions transcended religious boundaries.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) equally praised the late Islamic cleric for his bravery and selflessness. CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described the imam’s intervention as a rare example of moral courage that strengthened interfaith harmony and renewed hope in a nation often challenged by religious tensions
