Former Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o has backed Senegal’s Sadio Mané to claim the African Footballer of the Year award.
Mané, who previously won the accolade in 2021 after guiding the Teranga Lions to their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, played a pivotal role in Senegal’s second AFCON triumph this year, helping the team edge Morocco 1-0 in the final.

In an interview with the media, Eto’o lauded Mané’s influence both on and off the field, highlighting his composure during critical moments—particularly after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco in the final.
“I’m honoured to call him a friend, and his role in leading his team to victory was exceptional,” Eto’o said.
“I hope he wins the African Footballer of the Year again because what he did, especially in that tense moment, shows the qualities of a true leader.”
