The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has arrested several cart pushers for illegally dumping waste along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway in the Ojo area of Lagos State, as part of intensified efforts to curb environmental degradation.

The arrests followed the discovery of an unauthorised dumpsite during a routine monitoring exercise carried out by LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement Team under the Ijora–Seme Division.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos, the Director of Public Affairs of LAWMA, Mr Mukaila Sanusi, said the suspects were apprehended while unlawfully disposing of refuse at the location.

“The arrests were made after our enforcement team discovered an unauthorised dumpsite along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway during a routine monitoring exercise,” Sanusi said, adding that the operation was led by the Head of the Ijora–Seme Division, Mr Oladeji Adebayo.

Sanusi quoted the Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, as warning that the activities of unregulated waste handlers pose serious environmental risks and undermine the state’s structured waste management system.

“Waste disposal through unregulated handlers degrades the environment and undermines the structured waste management system put in place by the Lagos State Government,” Gbadegesin said.

He reiterated that domestic waste collection in Lagos is exclusively handled by registered Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and cautioned residents against patronising cart pushers and other unauthorised waste collectors.

The LAWMA boss assured residents that surveillance and enforcement activities would be sustained across identified flashpoints in the state, stressing that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted in line with existing environmental sanitation laws.

“Those involved in illegal dumping will be arrested and prosecuted,” Gbadegesin warned.

He advised residents to bag their waste properly, register with approved PSP operators and report cases of illegal dumping through LAWMA’s official communication channels.

LAWMA also issued a warning on its official X handle, stating that enforcement teams had arrested cart pushers over illegal dumping along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, Ojo, and that waste disposal through unregulated handlers remains illegal.

The agency added that surveillance and enforcement activities are ongoing across Lagos to tackle the persistent challenge of illegal dumping driven largely by unregulated waste handlers.
