ASUU: FG BEGINS IMPLEMENTATION OF 40 PERCENT ALLOWANCE FOR VARSITY LECTURERS

The federal government has started putting into action the main parts of its new agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
On January 14, the federal government signed the updated agreement with ASUU to deal with the ongoing strikes in Nigeria’s public universities.
The new agreement came after a lot of talks and negotiations between the government committee and the leaders of ASUU, and it was finally settled in 2025.
On Monday, Tunji Alausa, the minister of education, stated that the federal government has completed its part of the agreement by approving a 40 percent increase in the consolidated academic allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, effective from January 1, 2026.
Alausa mentioned that some federal universities have already begun applying the approved salary increase in their payments. He also said efforts are underway to make sure this increase is applied equally in all federal universities.
He explained that all vice–chancellors have been officially informed to pass on the allowance raise fully within their universities and include it in their payroll systems, so that all eligible academic workers receive the benefit.

The minister also directed vice-chancellors to strictly comply with the implementation framework for the consolidated tools allowance (CATA), urging them to make judicious use of available resources to ensure prompt payment.
Alausa stated that the CATA payment has already been recorded and officially communicated by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC). He also mentioned that including it in the 2026 budget went through a proper legal process.
According to him, making sure both the CAA increase and CATA are carried out on time can help make the academic environment better, raise the spirits of staff, and lead to better results in teaching, research, and learning in Nigerian universities.
He also reminded everyone that the federal government is committed to keeping its promises made with people in the education sector, and they will keep working together, being open and honest, keeping things peaceful at work, and keeping up the hard work to improve education in the country.
