DAWSON’S CREEK STAR JAMES VAN DER BEEK DIES AT 48 AFTER CANCER BATTLE
Agency Report

James Van Der Beek, the American actor widely known for his role as Dawson Leery on the hit television series Dawson’s Creek, has died at the age of 48.
His family announced his passing in a statement shared on Instagram on Wednesday evening, revealing that he died peacefully.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith and grace,” the statement read.
“There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother and friend.”
Van Der Beek was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in late 2023 but did not publicly disclose his illness until November 2024. He had reportedly been undergoing treatment while continuing to prioritise time with his family.
Born in 1977 in Cheshire, Connecticut, Van Der Beek was the eldest of three children. He began acting in middle school and, at the age of 15, told his mother he wanted to pursue professional auditions — a decision that would later launch a successful acting career.
He rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s with his breakout role in Dawson’s Creek, which became a cult favourite and helped define a generation of teen drama television. He also starred in the football drama Varsity Blues and appeared in several other film and television projects throughout his career.
A father of six, Van Der Beek was described by family and friends as deeply devoted to his wife, Kimberly, and their children.
Following his death, his wife shared a GoFundMe link on social media, revealing that his prolonged illness had placed significant financial strain on the family.
“The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds,” the post read.
“They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time.”
Tributes have continued to pour in from fans and colleagues, remembering Van Der Beek not only for his on-screen talent but also for his courage and grace in the face of illness.
