BREAKING: SULTAN DECLARES WEDNESDAY FIRST DAY OF RAMADAN 1447AH IN NIGERIA

The Sultanate Council has officially announced the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan 1447AH, declaring Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of fasting in Nigeria.

In a press release dated February 17, 2026, the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, in conjunction with the National Moonsighting Committee, confirmed that reports from various moonsighting committees across the country verified the sighting of the crescent on Tuesday, the 29th day of Sha’aban 1447AH.

His Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who is the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, accepted the reports and accordingly proclaimed Wednesday as the first day of Ramadan 1447AH.

The Sultan felicitated with the Nigerian Muslim Ummah and prayed for Allah’s guidance and blessings throughout the holy month. He also urged Muslims to continue praying for peace, progress and development in the country.

The statement conveyed his wishes for a peaceful and spiritually fulfilling Ramadan, praying that Allah (SWT) accepts the religious deeds of the faithful.

The press release was signed by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Waziri Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto.
