Three individuals have been remanded at Agodi Correctional Centre for allegedly attacking officials of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency while they were responding to a petrol tanker accident in Ibadan.
The suspects were arraigned on Tuesday at the Ejioku Magistrate’s Court on charges of assault, conspiracy, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
The court ordered their remand, while other individuals reportedly involved in the incident remain at large. The matter has been adjourned to March 12, 2026.
The incident took place at Atari-Agbon in the Olodo area of Ibadan after the fire service received an emergency call at 7:44 p.m. on Sunday.
Confirming the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Fire Services Agency, Dr Moroof Akinwande, said firefighters, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Bamidele Samsudeen, were quickly dispatched to the scene to prevent a potential explosion.
He stated that the team immediately began containment efforts using chemical foam compounds and other firefighting equipment to avert ignition and protect the public.
Akinwande noted that the operation was professionally executed and concluded successfully without any explosion. However, tensions escalated as officers were packing up their equipment.
“Suspected looters and hoodlums arrived at the scene and began attacking our personnel with dangerous weapons, including broken bottles, stones, and cutlasses,” he said.
Several firefighters sustained injuries of varying severity during the attack, with one officer suffering a serious head injury. The agency chairman, Dr Moroof Akinwande, stated that it took nearly an hour to evacuate the injured officer due to the chaos created by the attackers.
He added that the first hospital approached refused to treat the critically injured officer, citing concerns that hoodlums might storm the facility, referencing previous similar incidents. The officer was eventually transferred to another hospital, where he is now receiving treatment.
Akinwande described the assault as both unfortunate and condemnable, emphasizing that the firefighters were carrying out their statutory duties to protect lives and property.
The incident was reported at Iyana Ofa Police Station, resulting in the arrest and arraignment of three suspects. Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the attack.
