Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has strongly condemned the recent attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as an alarming escalation of internal party disputes that has gone too far.
In a statement released Tuesday evening, the governor expressed sympathy for the affected ADC members and called the incident regrettable, noting that some individuals allegedly exploited Edo State’s peaceful environment to instigate violence.
He said, “As peace-loving citizens, we categorically condemn and will not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of political activity.”
Okpebholo stressed that, as the state’s Chief Security Officer, he would ensure Edo does not become a battleground for political rivalry. “While the precise motive behind this attack remains unclear, I strongly believe its main objective is to tarnish Edo State’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful regions,” he added.
The governor emphasized that political blackmail would not weaken the support of Edo residents for their government and reaffirmed that politics should focus on performance, engagement with citizens, and building public trust. “This is the foundation of our reputation, and we are committed to maintaining it,” he said.
He also condemned the use of violence by politicians or individuals seeking electoral advantage, noting that such acts reflect a lack of integrity and respect for the electorate. Okpebholo stressed that his administration welcomes constructive opposition but will not be intimidated by blackmail or self-inflicted attacks.
While sympathizing with the ADC members, he advised the party to avoid blaming external actors, indicating that the conflict seems rooted in internal disagreements. He called on Edo residents to remain calm, maintain peace, and uphold the state’s longstanding reputation for tranquility.
“Edo remains a peaceful state, and that legacy must be preserved,” he affirmed.
Okpebholo warned all political parties to settle internal disputes before organizing public events, stating, “Any attempt to incite violence under the pretext of political activity will be firmly addressed.”
Finally, he urged the police and other security agencies to stay vigilant and monitor political gatherings, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property throughout Edo State.
